A Better Breakfast “Cereal”
My clients are always asking me what I eat for breakfast. My breakfasts are not complicated. I like easy options that fill me up and give me energy to do my work.
It’s Not Actually Cereal
One of my absolute favorite and easiest breakfasts is my fruit and nut bowl. I cut up one small apple, and add blueberries, raspberries, a handful of almonds, some walnuts, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, ground flax seeds, hemp seeds, or some combination of these options. I top it all off with a sprinkle of cinnamon and some almond milk. It’s not all or nothing. Sometimes I don’t have all the ingredients, so I use what I do have. That’s the nice thing about this breakfast. It requires no cooking, so it’s the fastest breakfast I can make in a hurry.
Live Well With Living Food
Here’s why I love it so much. Besides being easy and fast, it is packed with fiber from all the ingredients; protein from the nuts and seeds; it has healthy Omega-3 fatty acids from the walnuts, chia and flax seeds; the fruits are low glycemic (so they won’t spike your blood sugar), the cinnamon also works to control blood sugar, and they are full of antioxidants and phytonutrients. In addition to all of that (as if that wasn’t good reason enough), everything is raw so all of the enzymes in the food are intact. This is a LIVING breakfast. Get a Load of Those Micronutrients!
Let’s talk about antioxidants and phytonutrients for a moment. These are some of the most parts of the foods we eat. Antioxidants help us lower inflammation in our body. Oxidants can come from toxins in our environment (air, water), pesticides on our food, or internally from normal metabolic processes. Oxidants cause oxidation in the body. We all know what oxidation is because we have seen an apple rot and a car rust. Oxidation in the body is the same process and it creates inflammation and damages tissues. When enough damage has occurred that tissue or organ stops working properly. Antioxidants work against all of these providing us with protection against that “rusting” effect.
Phytonutrients protect us in another way. Phytonutrients help fight disease. Phytonutrients speak directly to our cells turning on or off pathways that lead to health or disease. Phytonutrients are those antioxidants you were reading about above. Another good reason to eat them is that phytonutrients work better together and with other nutrients too. Real team players!

My Favorite Breakfast “Cereal”
Ingredients
- 1 small apple I use Honeycrisp or Granny Smith, diced small
- ½ cup blueberries
- ½ raspberries
- ¼ cup almonds
- 6-8 walnuts chopped
- 1-2 Tbsp pumpkin seeds
- 1-2 Tbsp chia seeds
- 1 Tbsp Hemp seeds optional
- 1 tsp cinnamon optional
- non-dairy milk of choice to cover
Instructions
- Core apple and dice into small pieces. Place in bowl.
- Add all desired ingredients.
- Pour milk of choice over the ingredients in the bowl.
- Enjoy!
